Our Mission
At The Mockingbird Society, our mission is Building a world-class foster care system through collaboration, innovation and advocacy.
Specifically, The Mockingbird Society has set out to:
- Reform public policy and legislation
- Create a new model of foster care
- Support caregivers
- Involve youth, alumni and caregivers in advocating for system improvement and reform
The inspiration for our name, The Mockingbird Society, comes from the 1962 American classic by Harper Lee, To Kill a Mockingbird. Atticus, the widowed father of Jem and Scout, teaches his kids that it is a sin to kill a mockingbird, because “Mockingbirds don’t do one thing but make music for us to enjoy; they don’t do one thing but sing their hearts out for us.” At The Mockingbird Society, we share that same sense of commitment and compassion that Atticus felt toward the innocent mockingbirds with our vision of a world in which our most vulnerable children and youth are valued for simply being who they are.
