The Mockingbird Family Model
(Formerly known as the Mockingbird Foster Family Constellation Project)
Innovative Model of Care
The current system of care has serious shortcomings that must be addressed through creative approaches. Moving children multiple times from one foster home to another, as well as splitting up sibling sets, has proven devastating to child and adolescent development.
Objective
To pilot test, refine and improve a foster family pilot project in which cohorts of 4 to 6 families work closely with a central foster or group care center, as part of a coordinated service network, that gives foster parents needed respite, and keeps foster children and youth closely connected to siblings, peers, and resources.
Philosophy
- Unconditional and community based care
- Continuity of care: same school, same soccer team
- Family viewed as future support system
- Cultural relevancy
- Active child protection
- Support the adults who support kids
Outcomes
- Reduce multiple placements
- Support sibling and other family relationships
- Ensure cultural relevancy
- Increase respite care (planned and crisis)
