The Mockingbird Times
Program Description
Approximately 12,000 school age children across Washington must depend on the quality and quantity of state-funded services for their survival, growth and development. The Mockingbird Times is an effort to provide children and teenagers utilizing these services with a vehicle to express themselves. The Mockingbird Times is a monthly newspaper designed and produced by young people who have experience with the Washington State foster care/group home system and/or homelessness. Each edition emphasizes themes significant to children and youth accessing social services across the nation. Distributed nationally and on our website, Mockingbird Times is a voice for these young people; interacting with youth from across the nation by accepting their articles, poetry and art for publication.
The Mockingbird Times team is comprised of a group of young people between the ages of 13 and 22 who are paid to create the paper every month. The Mockingbird Times is distributed online, through mailings and as an insert in the Real Change newspaper based in Seattle.
